Beautiful, beautiful dogs.
My spaniel did much the same. He did pinch all the Christmas stockings before they were filled, in the hope that they contained doggy treats... but go near him with a santa hat and he did his 'I'm a hearthrug' impersonation.

Merry Christmas to you, Kate. Your spaniel is obviously as brilliant as these guys. Micah, the polar bear looking one, did the hearthrug thing, with a rapidly moving head so as to prevent it settling for more than a split second. Gunnar obviously took pity on me though and allowed it to stay for a full second. Or however long it took the camera to focus and click.
Hope you and all your family had a wonderful Christmas, too!
